Learning to Trust

When I was working through my ski certifications, sometimes, when I explained to my dad what I was working on or struggling with, he would say, “You’re too much in your body.”

I know that it wasn’t his intention, but for me, this phrase was tough to hear. It made me question whether being sensitive to what I was experiencing in my own body was actually a weakness.

I’ve reflected on this phrase more recently and realized that, in actuality, the ability to be deeply in my body has enabled me to perform at a high level, creatively investigate and diagnose a challenge, and now put myself in a client’s body to understand and feel their discomfort, restrictions, or performance plateaus.

This, I think, is embodiment.

And perhaps part of embodiment is learning to trust the information your body is giving you - not blindly, but with enough curiosity to reflect on it.
